Fernando and Damon are playwrights. A literary critic notices that the two playwrights have written the same number of acts during their careers, even though all of Fernando's plays have 9 acts and all of Damon's plays have 3 acts. What is the smallest number of acts each must have written?

Answer: 9

Explanation:

Given: All of Fernando's plays have 9 acts and all of Damon's plays have 3 acts.

The smallest number of acts each must have written = Least common multiple of 9 and 3

Since 9= 3 x 3

3 = 3 x 1

LCM(3,9) = 3 x 3 = 9

Hence, the smallest number of acts each must have written = 9
