How many parts were there of an ancient Egyptaian body? Name them. What 3 things must an ancient Egyptian have done to make it to the afterlife? Where did an ancient Egyptian go if they did not make it to the afterlife? What happened if an ancient Egyptian's heart was too heavy? What makes a person's heart light?

Answer:

1. According to Egyptology, the Egyptian body comprised of about 5 body parts. The number, however, has differed as power moved from one dynasty to another

Some of the body parts are:

  • Khet (the physical parts)
  • Sah (the spiritual body)
  • Ib (the heart)
  • Ka (the vital essence) : this is the part which leaves the physical body
  • Ba (the personality)
  • Shut (the shadow)
  • Sekhem (the form)

2. To make it to the afterlife, an Egyptian must be found by god anubis to have a heart that is light.

3. Those who didn't make it to the afterlife went to be devoured by Ammit.

4. If an Egyptian's heart was too heavy compared to the Feather of Truth and Justice then they were not admitted into the afterlife. They were devoured by Ammit. Ammit in ancient Egyptology is a female demon whose head was a crocodile, upper torse was a lion and lower torse a hippopotamus. Ammit was called several names such as the devourer, soul eater etc.

A person's heart which was usually removed during mummification into a separate container along with the lungs and other internals that easily decomposed was judged to be heavy if the person whilst in this life was evil.

5. A person's heart would be found to be as light as the Feather of Truth and Justice if they were good while in this life. Only then would they be admitted into the afterlife.

Cheers
