Every car in the USA has a mileometer. A mileometer shows the total distance that a car has travelled. Rahim bought a used car and paid $15 000 for it. When Rahim bought the car, the mileometer read: 0 0 9 3 8 5 miles. When Rahim wanted to sell the car, the mileometer read: 0 5 4 0 4 5 miles. He has been told that the value of the car will drop by 5 cents for every kilometre driven. How much money should Rahim expect to get for selling his car? Remember: $1 = 100 cents. Hint: First find out how many kilometres the car has been driven then work out how much the value of the car will drop by in dollars. Finally, subtract the value lost from the original value of the car to calculate how much the car will sell for. (3 marks)

Answer:

Rahim should expect to sell his car for approximately $11,406.35

Explanation:

Rahim drove his car for 54,045 - 9,385 = 44,660 miles

if the car depreciates 5¢ for every kilometer driven, we must convert 44,660 miles to kilometers

44,660 miles x 1,60934 kilometers/mile = 71,873.12 ≈ 71,873 kilometers

the car depreciated by 71,873 x $0.05 = $3,593.65

Rahim should expect to sell his car for approximately $15,000 - $3,593.65 = $11,406.35
