Th triangle is divided into 2 right triangles with legs x and 7 and hypotenuse 8

Using Pythagoras' identity, then

x² + 7² = 8²

x² + 49 = 64 ( subtract 49 from both sides )

x² = 15 ( take square root of both sides )
