Explanation:

1) 2<x<10...this is another way of representing x<10 and x>2 in an "and" inequality. If you look at 2<x<10 from left to right, it says 2 is less than x and x is less than 10.

2) 17<x<40...this represents x>17 and x<40 in an "and" inequality as well. If you look at 17<x<40, it reads 17 is less than or equal to x and x is less than 40.

3) x<-1 or x>2...the signs are greater than or equal to because the dots are closed on the number line. Also, this is not an "and" inequality. This is actually an "or" inequality. You can mainly tell because the lines are shaded opposite ways and do not intersect.
