Answer:

1.) Poor water quality. The water that surrounded the settlers was marshy, meaning that it was salty and essentially unsafe to consume.

2.) Mosquitoes: The swamp also left the settlers to deal with mosquitoes which proved to be carriers of diseases such as malaria, leaving the settlers to fight off disease while simultaneously fighting hunger and thirst due to their land and water quality.

3.) Lack of skills amongst the settlers: The majority of the settlers lacked the skills necessary for survival, even too afraid to venture from the settlement in search of food. The land quality and lack of farming skills were a dangerous combination.
