The following are the ages (years) of 5 people in a room:

23, 14, 16, 21, 22
A person enters the room.
The mean age of the 6 people is now 24.
What is the age of the person who entered the room?

Answer - 48

We know that the new mean, divided by 6, must be 24. That means you have to multiply 24 by 6 to get 144. From 144, subtract the total age of the 5 people before (so 144 - 96). This gives the age of the new person, 48.
