1. x is a spring balance and y is a beaker filled with water. Spring balance is an instrument used to measure weight of an object.

2. We know, apparent loss in weight = weight in air - apparent weight

Here, weight of the object in air = 20 N

Apparent weight of the object = 12 N

Therefore, the apparent loss of weight of the object = 20 N - 12 N = 8 N

3. We know, upward thrust is the weight of the fluid displaced by the immersed part of the object.

Upward thrust = W

The loss in weight of a solid completely immersed in a fluid is equal to the weight of fluid displaced by the solid.

So, the upward thrust is equal to the apparent loss of weight of the object, i.e., 8 N.

4. The volume of water displaced is equal to the volume of an object when it is fully immersed in water.

Answers:

  1. x is spring balance, y is a beaker.
  2. 8 N
  3. 8 N
  4. They are equal.

Hope you could understand.
