Elif Shafak grew up in Turkey, She believes that stories can create a window into which one can peer through other circles, that stories have the ability to change the world. In her opinion, fiction allows us to explore and be free.

She also said that "writers are not seen as creative individuals on their own, but as the representatives of their duties."disputing the idea that critics have that writers must have some sort of their heritage in their book. She says that Literature takes us beyond books. That storytelling leaves an impact on the readers life which can also change the way the reader looks at life.
