first you know that the speed on the way there is 40 mph and the back is 80

lets call the time x On the way there the time would just be X on the way back it would be x-1 because it took one less our

to calculate the distance you need to do speed times time therefor the distance on the way there would be 40x and the way back would be 80x-80

Then I made an equation 40x=80x-80 X=2

so the distance would be 80 miles but to find average speed you need to do total distance over total time so it would be 160 over 3 because the time is 2x-2 x=2 so thats 3
