The slaughter at Amritsar significantly altered Indian perceptions of the Raj (the era of British rule, which ran from 1757 to 1947). It caused Mahatma Gandhi, who had abandoned his nonviolence to assist enlist soldiers to protect the empire during World War I, to see British authority as diabolical.
