The 3/5th compromise proposed that of every 3 slaves of 5 would be counted as 1 citizen, giving the South more seats in congress. The 3/5 compromise was to try and equalize the power between the North and South to (unsuccessfully) stop the South from seceding. The benefits that the North was able to obtain was more taxes imposed to the South. The South, rich from previously tobacco, and then cotton, would have to pay more in taxes as they have a higher population.
