24 + 2(n) = 40
You could use any letter just n is preferable since something is absent and that thing is a number - so it starts with N. Good luck!

Answer:

24 + 2n = 40

Explanation:

let the number be n , then two times the number is 2n

This is then added to 24 and equal to 40

24 + 2n = 40 ← in equation form
