Explanation:

{ √(xy) } = 3

$= > ( { √(xy) })^(2) = {3}^(2)$

= > xy = 9

Also ,

x - y = 12

$= > {(x - y)}^(2) = {12}^(2)$

$= > {x}^(2) + {y}^(2) - 2xy = 144$

Putting the value of 'xy' above gives :-

${x}^(2) + {y}^(2) - 2 * 9 = 144$

$= > {x}^(2) + {y}^(2) = 144 + 18 = 162$
