Points A, B, and C are collinear and A is between B and C.

AB = 4x-3, BC = 7x+5, and AC = 5x-16.
Find each value.
1. BC (answer: 89)
2. AB (answer: 45)
3. AC (answer: 44)

Hey there!

Looks like your answers are correct!

If A is between B and C, that makes the order BAC.

That means that BC is the total length of BAC.

So, that also means that AB + AC = BC, or

(4x- 3) + (5x - 16) = 7x + 5

4x - 3 + 5x - 16 = 7x + 5

9x - 19 = 7x + 5

2x - 19 = 5

2x = 24

x = 12

Now, we substitute "x" into each of the equations.

AB = 4(12) - 3

AB = 48 - 3

AB = 45

BC = 7(12) + 5

BC = 84 + 5

BC = 89

AC = 5(12) - 16

AC = 60 - 16

AC = 44
