I changed 3 into an equivalent improper fraction by putting a 1 underneath it.

3/4 x = 3/1

For 3/4 to be equal to 3/1 you need to find how many times 3/4 goes into 3/1. So you must change the denominators to be equal. To do this you must find the least common multiple. Which is 4.
