adding both gives 13

a + b = 13 •••••(i)

difference between the two is 1

b - a = 1 ••••••(ii)

So we have two equations that we can solve simultaneously;

b = 1 + a; Substitute this into 1

a + 1 + a = 13

2a + 1 = 13

2a = 13-1

2a = 12

a = 12/2

a = 6

b = a + 1 = 6 + 1 = 7

The numbers are 6 and 7 while 6 is the smaller number

B.Let the number be x

Divide by 5; x/5, then subtract 2 , we get 25

x/5 - 2 = 25

x/5 = 25 + 2

x/5 = 27
