PR = PQ + QR = 40

Substitute PR and QR into the equation above

40 = 5x - 2 + x + 12

Combine like terms

40 = 6x + 10

Subtract 10 from both sides

30 = 6x

Divide both sides by 6

5 = x

PQ = 5x - 2= 5(5) - 2 = 23

Remember, PR = PQ + QR

40 = 23 + QR

Subtract 23 from both sides.

17 = QR

PQ = 23
