In a representitive democracy, people consent to leadership through their votes that they give to ceratin people who have the power to make decisons on behalf of them and their best interest. When a new person is elected, citizen's consent is renewed, or the social contract is renewed. This is an example of Consent of the Governed, meaning that the government is only legitimate if the people agree with it's existance. Generally, a democracy cannot exist with out the voice of the people.
