This situation implied Africans were captured against their will and then transported in ships in which the conditions were deplorable as they receive little food, were chained, beat and even killed or raped. Because of this, the only way most Africans found to rebel and escape from these conditions was by jumping overboard as even when this implied in most cases their own death they believed in this way they could end their suffering and their soul or spirit would return to Africa.
