Grandma Susette is making a quilt. If the area of the

quilt is 24 3/5 square feet and one side has a length of
4 1/10,what is the width of the quilt?

Explanation:

let A = 24 3/5 = (24*5 +3)/5 = 123/5 ft^2 the area

l = 4 1/10 = (4*10 + 1)/10 = 41/10 ft the length

w = the width, w>0

since the area = length*width we have:

l*w = A

(41/10)*w = 123/5

by solving we find:

w = 6 ft
