In The Hunger Games, Peeta and Haymitch’s relationship is very complex. It is very confused by utility and often it is hard to tell whether Peeta is doing things out of kindness or hope to receive something useful in return from Haymitch. Towards the beginning it is utility based but he still acts kindly towards Haymitch and does more than one would for a utility based relationship. Whether Peeta is doing it only to gain information and support is not very clear but it is a possibility. Due to Peeta's kindness he receives more information and guidance from haymitch that helps him to gain more support and pity that helps him later in the games.
