European colonists used the networks that Native Americans had created to expand their own colonial empires.

For example, when the Spanish arrived in Mexico and Peru, the found the Aztec and Incan Empires respectively. After defeating these empires, they used the empires networks to establish their own colonies. In fact, the Spanish built Mexico City in the same place where the ruins of the former Aztec capital: Tenochtitlan.
