The hypothalamus is a small part of the brain located at it's base near the pituitary gland. It has three main regions and each region contains different nuclei. These neurons perform different important functions in controlling the many physiological processes and in the maintenance of homeostasis in the body. Five of such processes that are regulated by the hypothalamus include;

1) The hypothalamus regulates the release of hormones by producing hormone releasing factors which trigger or inhibit the release of hormones form other parts of the body.

2) Regulation of body temperature.

3) Regulation of blood pressure and heart rate.

4) Regulation of appetite and weight control.

5) Regulation of the volume of body fluids.
