Answer: The value of x-y is 14.

Explanation:

If x:y=5:3 is equal to x+y=56 then you can say that 5/8 of 56 is equal to the value of x and 3/8 of 56 is equal to the value of y.

so x=
(5)/(8)*56

x = 0.625 * 56

x = 35

And y= 3/8 *56

y= 0.375 *56

y= 21

Check: 35 + 21 =56

Now we know the value of x is 35 and the value of x is 21.

so x- y has to be 35 -21 = 14

Answer:

x = 35

y = 21

x - y = 14

Explanation:

x/y = 5/3 => x = 5y/3

x + y = 56 => 5y/3 + y = 56 => 8y/3 = 56 => y/3 = 7 => y = 21 => x = 56 - 21 = 35 => x- y = 35 - 21 = 14
