The poem shows a sad situation for children who are exploited because of work. The poet shows a melancholy reality that tries to make the reader understand that the work these children are subjected to is something very uncomfortable and extremely sad.

On the lines "¨Could scarcely cry ¨Weep! Weep! Weep! Weep! ¨ So your chimneys I sweep, and in soot I sleep." the author shows how unhappy these children were and shows all their discontent with this reality.

In the lines "That thousands of sweepers, D, Joe, Ned, and Jack, Were all of them locked up in coffins of black," he shows how these children were doomed to die and missed a lifetime of opportunity.
