A cell phone tower covers a circular area with a radius of 15 miles. You are at a location that is 11 miles west and 12 miles south. Do you have cell service? Use mathematics to explain how you arrived at your answer.

Answer:

No you do not.

This is because we can use Pythagoras Theorem to show that our location sits outside the 15 mile radius of the cell tower.

To work is out you would write the equation


{11}^(2) + {12}^(2) = 265

Then to work out the Hypotheses you would


√(265) = 16.2788205961

Which proves that the location is outside of the 15 Mile radius of the cell tower.
