Data: {3.9, 2.1, 0.8, 1.5, 4.1}

mean: sum of numbers/total numbers

part A

mean: (3.9+2.1+0.8+1.5+4.1)/5 = 2.48

part B

If all the data's are increased by 5

{8.9, 7.1, 5.8, 6.5, 9.1}

Then mean (8.9+7.1+5.8+6.5+9.1)/5 ⇒ 7.48

part C

If the data is doubled.

{7.8, 4.2, 1.6, 3, 8.2}

Then mean (7.8+4.2+1.6+3+8.2)/5 ⇒ 4.96

Given↷

  • set of data ⇢3.9 ,2.1,0.8,1.5,4.1

To find↷

  • The mean
  • Mean when each piece is increased by 5
  • Mean when each piece is doubled

Answer↷

  • 2.48
  • 7.48
  • 4.96

Solution↷

#1)

  • Mean of a set of date = sum of observations/Total no. of observations
  • Mean of the given set of data = 3.9+2.1+0.8+1.5+4.1/5
  • Mean of the given set of data = 2.48

#2)

  • Adding 5 to each piece of data ,we get

⇢3.9+5 = 8.9

⇢2.1 +5 = 7.1

⇢0.8+5 = 5.8

⇢1.5 +5 = 6.5

⇢4.1 +5 = 9.1

  • Mean = 8.9+7.1+5.8+6.5+9.1/5
  • Mean = 7.48

#3)

  • Mean when each piece of data is doubled= 2(3.9+2.1+0.8+1.5+4.1)/5
  • Mean when each piece of data is doubled= 4.96
