3x +2y= 4 -----(1)

2y= 8 -5x -----(2)

subst. (2) into (1):

3x + 8-5x= 4

3x-5x =4-8 (bring x terms to 1 side, constant to the other)

-2x= -4 (simplify)

2x= 4

x= 4÷2 (÷2 on both sides)

x= 2 (simplify)

subst. x=2 into (2):

2y= 8-5(2)

2y= 8 -10 (expand)

2y= -2 (simplify)

y= -2 ÷2

y= -1
