A container is in the shape of the rectangular prism shown. Stan measures the length of PS as 12 feet, the length of SR as 9 feet, and the length of RV as 8 feet. Stan needs to calculate the distance from point P to point V

From the image, PR, PS and SR form a right angled triangle on the case of the cuboid.

With PR as the hypotenuse side, using Pythagoras theorem,

(PR)² = (PS)² + (PR)²

(PR)² = 12² + 9² = 144 + 81 = 225

PR = √225

PR = 15 ft.

On a second evaluation, the required length, PV, PR and RV form another right angled triangle with PV as the hypotenuse side, using Pythagoras theorem again,

(PV)² = (PR)² + (RV)²

(PV)² = 15² + 8² = 225 + 64 = 289

PV = √289

PV = 17 ft.
