if a magnet were to break in half, the new pieces would each get their own positive and negative sides just like the original magnet

Magnets are kinda like batteries. If you cut a magnet in half, the newly cut faces will into smaller positive and negative pieces. So technically it’ll become smaller with a weaker magnetic pull.
