SUBSTITUTE -9 as y in the equation
8x + 9(-9) = -17
8x + (-81) = -17
8x -81 = -17
COLLECT LIKE TERMS
8x = -17 + 81
8x = 81 - 17
8x = 64
DIVIDE BOTH SIDES BY 8
8x/8 = 64/8
x = 8
Therefore, y = -9 and x = 8
