Given the 2 equations

3x + y = - 2 → (1)

x - 2y = 4 → (2)

Rearrange (2) expressing x on terms of y by adding 2y to both sides

x = 2y + 4

Substitute x = 2y + 4 into (1)

3(2y + 4) + y = - 2 ← distribute and simplify left side

6y + 12 + y = - 2

7y + 12 = - 2 ( subtract 12 from both sides )

7y = - 14 ( divide both sides by 7 )

y = - 2
