Describe the different goals of the North and the South at the start of the Civil
War.

North:

- Larger population

- More resources

South:

- Excellent military leaders

- Strong fighting spirit

- Most of war fought in south

- Knew land and had will to defend it

South: wanted to be independent nation

- didn't have to invade North or destroy Union army

- needed to fight long and hard enough to convince North that war not worth the cost

North: wanted to restore the Union

- forces had to invade south

- force breakaway states to give up quest for freedom

- slavery helped drive wedge between North and South

- 1862- Lincoln's original aim not to defeat slavery
