Explanation: Spain was the first of the European nations to explore and conquer large sections of the American continents, thereafter England and France too. The European nations came to the Americas to increase their wealth by finding gold and silver, and broaden their influence over world affairs.

The European nations claimed land, sometimes more than one country claimed the same land. However, they knew little about the lands and

after claiming them, the explorers moved on with no one staying behind to protect the lands.

Spain called its colony New Spain and this included land in Mexico, many islands in the Caribbean Sea as well as Panama. The first permanent English colony in North America was Jamestown while

the first French settlement still standing and still populated is Quebec City.
