A student heats a balloon in the microwave. If the balloon initially has a volume of 0.5 liters and at a temperature of 21°C, what will the volume of the balloon be after he heats it to a temperature of 125°C?

Charles Law

Charles Law was formulated by "Jacques Charles."

The relationship between Volume and Temperature are directly proportional. When pressure is held constant. It means when the Volume increase, the Temperature will also increases. But the Pressure is held constant.

This is one of the Gas Laws.

The formula of Charles' Law:

  • V1/T1 = V2/T2

Since:

  • V1 = initial volume
  • V2 = final volume
  • T1 = initial temperature
  • T2 = final temperature

Example Solution:

1. A student heats a balloon in the microwave. If the balloon initially has a volume of 0.5L and at a temperature of 21°C. What will the volume of the balloon be after he heats it to a temperature of 125°C?

Given:

V1 = 0.5L

T1 = 21°C + 273.15 = 294.15K

T2 = 125°C + 273.15 = 398.15K

Required: V2 (final volume)

Solution:

V2 = (V1)(T2)/T1

V2 =(0.5L)(294.15K)/398.15K

V2 =147.075L.K/398.15K

V2 = 58557.91125 L

The answer is 58557.91125 L
