On a​ team, 5 girls and 3 boys scored a total of 44 points. The difference between the number of points scored by the 5 girls and the number of points scored by the 3 boys is 26. Each girl scored the same number of points and each boy scored the same number of points. Find the number of points scored by each girl and each boy.

Answer:

Explanation:

let the no of points each girl gets be x and each boy gets be y

so you can form 2 eqns:

5x + 3y = 44

5x - 3y = 26

so we can have the 1st eqn minus the 2nd one to cancel out the "x" so we're left with y

5x + 3y - (5x - 3y)

=6y (remember double negative is a positive)

6y = 44 - 26

6y = 18

y = 3

so now that we have y we can go back to the 1st eqn

5x + 3(3) = 44

5x = 35

x = 7

so no. of points scored by each girl is 7 and no. of points scored by each boy is 5.
