A common mathematical pattern starts as 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, ... The first two terms are both equal to 1 and after that, each number in the sequence is the sum of the two numbers immediately before it. That is, the third term in the sequence is 2 (since that equals 1 + 1), the fourth term is 3 (since that equals 1 + 2), and the fifth term must be 2 + 3, which equals 5.
