To solve this you must use a proportion like so...

(part)/(whole) = (part)/(whole)

The whole is the total number of students in the class (10,000). The part is the number of students that are majoring in engineering (2,500). This is one part of the proportion.

The other part of the proportion will be where the percentage is solved. A percent's always taken out of the 100. This means that it will have one proportion with 100 as the whole and the unknown (x) as the part. We will then solve for the x

Here is your proportion:

(2500)/(10,000) =(x)/(100)

Now you must cross multiply

13.5*100 = 15*x

250,000 = 10,000x

To isolate x divide 10,000 to both sides

250,000 / 10,000 = 10,000x / 10,000

25 / 1 = 1x

25 = x

This means that 25% of the university's freshman class is majoring in engineering

Hope this helped!
