Pls help me understand!

A university law school accepts 6 out of every 13 applicants. If the school accepted 498 students, find how many applicants they received

1079 applicants

Explanation:

This is a simple ratio- I set up the problem as:


(6)/(13) =
(498)/(x)

Then you solve it, but the "shortcut" process is just to multiple the diagonal, then divide by the corner number.

13 x 498 = 6474

6474/6 = 1079
