Around the middle of chapter 3 we finally meet Gatsby. There is much mystery surrounding Gatsby both before and after we meet him in this chapter. Almost everyone Nick meets has some extraordinary opinion about him.

A woman at the party from chapter 2 tells Nick, “Well they say he’s a nephew or a cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm’s. That’s where all his money comes from.” (32).
One of Gatsby’s guests in chapter 3 says, “Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once.” And again, “it’s more that he was a German spy during the war.” (44).
Jordan Baker says, “he told me once he was an Oxford man.” “However, I don’t believe it.” (49).
1A. Do you think any of these rumors hold any truth?
1B. How do you think Gatsby got his money?
1C. Why do you think Gatsby throws these marvelously extravagant parties?
1D. What do you think of Gatsby’s character thus far?

Answer:

1A. rumors are molded from truth and although it is obvious most ore untrue (such as murder) it is possible he served in the war and was an oxford man

1b. Given the times as the american dream was everywhere, it is possible he got his money by monopolizing or smuggling goods, given this is around the time of prohibition he may be a bootlegger or he may be wealthy from status from the war,he represents new money so he wouldn't have inherited it.

1c. Gatsby may be throwing such parties to grab someones attention, he himself doesn't seem to enjoy or be part of the festivities but maybe he hopes someone else will.

1d.I think Gatsby's mysterious character is charming and seems to have a warm hearted demeanor through the description of his smile and attitude towards Nick.

Step-by-step explanation:

hope this helped a lot
