Note that the basic function and graph here are of y = √x. The graph of this basic (parent) function has the same shape as the graph shown, EXCEPT that the graph of y = √x has been translated 4 units upward.

Now look at the given graph. We want to find the function represented by this graph. We note that the shape of the graph is exactly the same as that of the graph of y = √x, except that the latter graph has been shifted up 4 units.

Thus, the parent function y = √x becomes y = √(x) + 4.
