Joey bought 8 pounds of bananas.

Explanation:

Given,

Cost of bananas per pound = $0.55

Coupon = $0.75

Final total = $3.65

(a) write a variable and tell what it represents

Let,

x be the pounds of banana bought by Joey.

(b) write an equation to represent this situation

Cost per pound * Number of pounds - Coupon = Final Total

0.55x - 0.75 = 3.65

(c) solve and explain why your answer makes sense.

Adding 0.75 on both sides

0.55x-0.75+0.75=3.65+0.75\\0.55x=4.40\\

Dividing both sides by 0.55

(0.55x)/(0.55)=(4.40)/(0.55)\\x=8

We will put x=8 in Eqn 1 to check;

0.55(8) - 0.75 = 3.65\\4.40-0.75 = 3.65\\3.65 = 3.65

Therefore,

Joey bought 8 pounds of bananas.
