An animal shelter spends $3.00 per day for each bird and $7.00 per day to care for each cat. Autumn noticed that the shelter spent $51.00 caring for birds and cats on Friday. Autumn found a record showing that there were a total of 9 birds and cats on Friday. How many birds were at the shelter on Friday?

Answer:

The answer is 3 birds.

Explanation:

This is a trial and error question. If you have 1 bird and 8 cats, the total amount of money is ($3 x 1 bird)+($7 x 8 cats.) This equals $3+$56=$59. This is too much money. If you have 2 birds and 7 cats, the total amount of money is ($3 x 2 birds)+($7 x 7 cats.) This equals $6+$49=$55. This is too much money. If you have 3 birds and 6 cats, the total amount of money is ($3 x 3 birds)+($7 x 6 cats.) This equals $9+$42=$51. This is your answer. I hope this helps and that you have a great day!!
