Answer:

America has been messed up since it was "made." (I can say that...I'm an American.) I am not completely sure what side you are thinking of...but American's (Union) constantly got into fights with the Confederate side even before the Civil War. The key thing to understand though is that American's (Union) ATTEMPTED to confront the issue(s) but that somehow made it worse. Fast forward a little bit and now we are in the CW. That caused a lot of pain, anger, and bloodshed. Lincoln was the only American that went about "confronting" it the right way. Now, the results, the results are a completely different story. See, for awhile everything was better (after the war) but somehow things got bad again. (Segregation) Now almost everything is okay again. Sadly, there is still racism (not just for black people but every ethnicity.)
