The shovel felt heavy in Stanley's soft, fleshy hands. He

tried to jam it into the earth, but the blade banged against
the ground and bounced off without making a dent. The
vibrations ran up the shaft of the shovel and into
Stanley's wrists, making his bones rattle....
At the time, Elya thought nothing of the curse. He was
just a fifteen year old kid, and "eternity" didn't seem
much longer than a week from Tuesday. Besides, he liked
Madame Zeroni and would be glad to carry her up the
mountain. He would have done it right then and there,
but he wasn't yet strong enough.

Final answer:

The flashback in Holes connects to the present day plot through determination.

Step-by-step explanation:

The flashback in the passage from Holes connects to the present day plot by showing determination. In the flashback, Elya is determined to carry Madame Zeroni up the mountain, even though he is not yet strong enough.

Similarly, in the present day plot, Stanley is determined to dig a hole and make progress, even though he initially struggles with the heavy shovel. Their shared determination links the two storylines together.
