Why potassium bromide is KBr but pitassium oxide is K2O

The charge of the K ion is +1, and the charge of Br is -1, so they have a one to one ratio in order to balance out the charges. The charge of Oxygen, O, is -2, so in order for the charges to balance out to zero there have to be 2 K.
