The length of a rectangle is 8 inches more than the width. The perimeter is 36 inches. Find the length and the width (in inches).

Answer:

Width = 5 inches

Length = 13 inches

Explanation:

Width = W

Length = W + 8

Perimeter = 2(Length) + 2(Width)

Substitute in known values

36 = 2(W+8) + 2(W)

Multiply

36 = 2W + 16 + 2W

Add

36 = 4W + 16

Subtract 16 from both sides of the equation

20 = 4W

Divide both sides of the equation by 4

W = 5

Width = 5 inches

Length = 5 + 8 inches = 13 inches
