Stalactites are icicle-shaped mineral formations found hanging from the roofs of caves. They are formed by water, most commonly rainfall, mixing with the calcium carbonate found in the limestone walls of the cave. This mixture then seeps through the ground, very slowly, and collects on the roof of the cave. The icicle shape is formed by this gradual accumulation of minerals.
