Suppose that the number u were thinking about is x thus :

$(1)/(4) x + (1)/(2) x = 12 \\$

Multiply both sides by 4

$4 * ( (1)/(4) x + (1)/(2) x) = 4 * 12 \\$

Divide both sides by 3

$(3x)/(3) = (48)/(3 ) \\$

x = 16
